Nvidia has expanded its autonomous vehicle ambitions with a new set of partnerships across global automakers, including Hyundai Motor, Nissan Motor, Isuzu Motors, BYD and Geely. The agreements centre around Nvidia’s Drive Hyperion platform, which is designed to help companies develop and deploy advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous driving capabilities.

Drive Hyperion supports Level 4 autonomy, where vehicles can operate without human intervention in specific environments or conditions.

Speaking at Nvidia’s GTC conference, CEO Jensen Huang said the self-driving industry is reaching a turning point. “The ChatGPT moment of self-driving cars has arrived,” Huang said, adding that the number of robotaxi-ready vehicles is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.

Where the industry stands today

Despite growing investment, fully autonomous vehicles are not yet widely available for consumer purchase. Most vehicles on sale today operate at Level 2 autonomy, where driver assistance features require constant human supervision.

Some companies, such as Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, already operate limited robotaxi services using Level 4 vehicles in select markets.

Others, including Tesla and Uber, continue to develop their own autonomous systems, while Amazon’s Zoox is also working on robotaxi solutions.

Nvidia’s broader AV strategy

Drive Hyperion is part of Nvidia’s larger end-to-end autonomous vehicle ecosystem, which includes data centre training, large-scale simulation and in-vehicle computing systems. The company itself does not manufacture cars but provides the computing platform and software tools required to power autonomous systems.

Existing partners already using Nvidia’s AV technology include companies such as Aurora, Nuro, Sony Group, Stellantis and Lucid Group.

High stakes and industry challenges

Autonomous vehicles are seen as a major long-term growth opportunity, with analysts projecting a multi-trillion-dollar market as the technology matures. Artificial intelligence is expected to play a key role in enabling safer and more scalable self-driving systems.

However, the industry has also faced setbacks.

General Motors-backed Cruise, once considered a leading player, shut down its robotaxi operations in 2024 after a high-profile incident involving a pedestrian in San Francisco. GM had invested more than $10 billion into the unit.

Even as challenges remain, Nvidia’s expanding partnerships suggest continued momentum as automakers and tech companies look to make autonomous driving commercially viable.
