The National Highways Authority of India has announced that the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process will be discontinued for cars on all new FASTags issued from February 1, 2026. The decision applies to FASTags issued for cars, jeeps, and vans and is aimed at addressing post-activation issues faced by private vehicle owners on national highways.
KYV was earlier introduced as a post-activation verification step to confirm vehicle details. However, it often resulted in delays and repeated follow-ups, even when users had submitted valid documents during purchase.
What changes for new FASTag users
For new FASTags issued on or after February 1, 2026, car owners will no longer be required to complete KYV after activation. All vehicle verification will now be completed before the FASTag is activated, removing the need for any post-issuance checks.
This updated process will apply to FASTags purchased both through physical points of sale and online platforms. Once activated, users will be able to use the FASTag without facing additional verification-related interruptions.
How the rule applies to existing FASTags
For car FASTags that have already been issued, KYV will no longer be mandatory as a routine requirement. Users will not be asked to undergo KYV unless a specific issue is reported.
KYV may still be initiated in cases involving complaints such as incorrect FASTag issuance, loose or damaged tags, or suspected misuse. In the absence of such complaints, existing FASTag holders will not be required to complete KYV.
Stronger pre-activation checks by banks
To support the removal of post-activation KYV, NHAI has strengthened pre-activation validation norms for FASTag issuer banks. FASTag activation will now be permitted only after vehicle details are verified through the VAHAN database.
The provision for post-activation validation has been discontinued. In exceptional cases where vehicle data is unavailable on VAHAN, banks must complete verification using the Registration Certificate before activation, with accountability placed on the issuer.
What this means for highway users
By shifting the responsibility of verification entirely to banks before activation, NHAI aims to simplify the FASTag process for private vehicle owners. The authority expects the move to reduce grievances and improve the overall toll payment experience on national highways.
