New Tatkal ticket booking rules from July 1, 2025: Everything that has changed and what it means for you

The Ministry of Railways has announced new Tatkal ticket booking rules that will come into effect from July 1, 2025. These changes will impact Aadhaar and non-Aadhaar users differently, with a focus on preventing misuse by unauthorised agents and ensuring fair access to Tatkal bookings for genuine passengers.

The image detailing the updated rules was shared by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on June 10, 2025.

Mandatory authentication for online booking

From July 1, 2025, Tatkal tickets booked via the IRCTC website or app will be restricted to users who are Aadhaar authenticated. This means only passengers who have verified their Aadhaar details on IRCTC will be allowed to proceed with Tatkal bookings through digital platforms.

Additionally, starting July 15, 2025, an OTP-based Aadhaar verification process will also be required as an added layer of authentication.

Booking restrictions at counters and agents for non-Aadhaar users

For passengers who are not Aadhaar authenticated, Tatkal booking will still be possible, but only through PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters or authorised agents such as YTSK (Yatri Ticket Suvidha Kendra). However, from July 15, 2025, these bookings too will require OTP verification sent to the booking person’s registered mobile number.

This move is aimed at tightening control over bookings and discouraging misuse by unauthorised middlemen.

Additionally, authorised travel agents will no longer be able to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the Tatkal booking window. This applies to both AC and non-AC classes:

AC Classes: Agents can book only after 10:30 AM (Tatkal opens at 10:00 AM)

Non-AC Classes: Agents can book only after 11:30 AM (Tatkal opens at 11:00 AM)

Why these changes?

According to reports, the decision comes after growing concerns about unverified and bulk hoarding of Tatkal tickets by agents, which reduced availability for regular users. The new rules are intended to streamline the booking process and ensure that the Tatkal quota benefits genuine passengers.

What it means for you?

The new Tatkal ticket rules mean tighter verification and fewer booking loopholes. From July 1, only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book Tatkal tickets online via IRCTC and this is perhaps the biggest change here with the new rule.

Non-Aadhaar users, on the other hand, are limited to counters or authorised agents, for tatkal ticket bookings.

Additionally, agents will be restricted from booking during the first 30 minutes of the Tatkal window, giving individual users a fairer chance. These changes aim to curb misuse by touts and ensure genuine passengers get better access to Tatkal tickets.
