If you are Amazon Fire TV Stick users and rely on it to consume content on your TV, especially via Netflix, then Amazon has a bad news for you. Starting June 2, 2025, select Amazon devices will stop supporting the Netflix app. And, users of these devices won’t be able to access Netflix app and watch content after the said date.
According to a report by Tomsguide, Amazon is sending an email to affected Fire TV Stick users mentioning that Netflix will stop working on their device starting June 2.
Devices losing Netflix supportThe change impacts the original Fire TV and the first-generation Fire TV Stick models, including the version with the Alexa voice remote. These devices were launched back in 2014 and have not received software or security updates from Amazon in recent years.
Given the age and limited performance of these devices, most users may have already upgraded. However, for those still using the first-generation hardware, Netflix will become inaccessible starting June.
Why is support endingWhile Netflix hasn’t provided an official reason for discontinuing support, it is likely tied to evolving streaming technology. The company has been shifting towards newer standards like the AV1 codec, which improves streaming quality and efficiency. Older hardware typically lacks the capability to handle such modern codecs, making continued support technically impractical.
What users can doIf you are using one of the affected devices, the only solution is to upgrade to a newer model. Options include the Fire TV Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick 4K Max, both of which support modern streaming standards and offer better performance.
