More and more people are choosing them over traditional computers, and the numbers prove it. According to the latest data from Canalys, over 15.4 million AI-capable PCs were shipped in the last quarter of 2024—that’s nearly one in four PCs sold. For the entire year, 17% of all PCs came with built-in AI, with Apple leading the market at 54%, followed by Lenovo and HP at 12% each.
These aren’t just regular laptops and desktops. AI-powered PCs have special chips that speed up tasks, improve battery life, and introduce smart features like voice assistants and real-time editing tools. With Windows 10 support ending soon, millions of people will need to upgrade, which means AI PC sales are set to rise even more in 2025.
Tech giants are already gearing up for this shift. Intel is focusing on high-end models with its Lunar Lake chips, while AMD is targeting both premium and mid-range buyers. Qualcomm is making AI-powered laptops more affordable, and Apple is cutting prices on older Macs to attract even more customers, especially in emerging markets.
But there’s one challenge—rising prices. New US tariffs on Chinese imports could make laptops more expensive, which might slow down demand, especially in the world’s biggest PC market.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s decision to end support for Windows 10 is pushing both businesses and regular users to upgrade. Many are expected to make the switch in late 2025, but if trade tensions continue, it could shake up the market.
At CES 2025, brands like Lenovo, Dell, HP, and Asus showed off new AI-powered features designed to boost productivity. Apple is also rolling out AI-driven tools across Macs, iPads, and iPhones. AI might not be the main reason people buy a new computer yet, but it’s quickly becoming a must-have feature.
In a surprising move, Dell is renaming its laptops—goodbye XPS and Inspiron, hello ‘Dell,’ ‘Dell Pro,’ and ‘Dell Pro Max.’ The change is meant to make things simpler for buyers, but it could take time for customers to get used to the new names.
Apple had a fantastic end to 2024, it grew faster than its competitors. It now holds 10.2% of the overall PC market and a massive 45% share of AI-capable PC sales. The company is also launching the Apple Partner Network to attract more business customers and make Macs a bigger player in the workplace.
