Meta’s Threads, an X competitor, is officially relocating from the website Threads.net, which it acquired last year, to ‘Threads.com.’ The transition coincides with a handful of quality-of-life improvements for the Threads desktop app, including the ability to display a user’s custom feeds in the same order they have arranged them on mobile.
Threads shifts to a new domain, adds useful features on desktopMeta had initially launched the Threads social media app in July 2023 on the URL Threads.net, as a Sequoia-backed Slack alternative startup had owned the .com domain during that time. However, in September 2024, Meta acquired the ‘Threads.com’ domain name and later redirected the URL Threads.com to Threads.net. But Meta has now solved this Threads URL problem as the ‘Threads.com’ now officially redirects users to the web version of the Threads.
The change gives Meta a more prominent and better-remembered URL for the app, which currently has over 320 million monthly active users. Moreover, Threads on the web is also getting several interface updates to enhance the social media site’s desktop experience. The first is the inclusion of custom feeds in the web app in the same order as they appear on the mobile app. Additionally, users will now be able to access their liked and saved posts via the main menu instead of having to create a pinned column to access them.
Further, the web version of Threads now allows users to copy an image post instead of it being captured in a screenshot, which allows posts to be shared on other social media sites. Threads users will also be able to click a plus ‘+’ button in the bottom right to open a new window and compose a post.
Meta is also stepping up its efforts to attract users directly from X. The company is testing a new feature that allows users to upload a list of people they follow on X and follow them on Threads. It works by having users download an archive of their X data and uploading it on Threads. However, it is still in the beta stage.
