Meta is gearing up to unveil a new pair of smart glasses that go beyond voice commands. At its upcoming Connect conference next month, the company is expected to launch Hypernova, its first consumer-ready glasses with a built-in display. Alongside the glasses, Meta will also introduce a futuristic neural wristband that lets you control devices with subtle arm movements.
According to reports, Hypernova will cost around $800 and is being developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the eyewear giant behind brands like Ray-Ban. Unlike Meta’s earlier smart glasses that relied mostly on voice assistants, these new ones will have a tiny color display tucked into the right lens.
But don’t expect a full-blown virtual screen in front of your eyes just yet. The display will be small, with a field of view of around 20 degrees, and will mainly show bite-sized information such as text messages, notifications, and simple updates. Think of it as a heads-up display rather than an immersive AR experience.
The glasses will also be a bit bulkier and heavier compared to their voice-only predecessors, which is why Meta is not betting on massive sales right away. Instead, the company seems to be positioning Hypernova as a first step toward more advanced consumer AR glasses.
What really sets the launch apart, though, is the companion neural wristband. Built using technology from CTRL Labs — a startup Meta acquired in 2019 — the wristband reads signals from your arm muscles and turns them into digital commands. This means you could one day control your glasses or other devices with subtle finger movements or gestures, without needing a physical controller.
Alongside Hypernova, Meta is also expected to showcase the third generation of its voice-only smart glasses at Connect.
With this mix of eyewear and neural tech, Meta seems determined to bring the future of computing a little closer to reality, even if it’s starting small.
