Looking for a last-minute train ticket for travelling home this Diwali? Here's how to get confirmed ticket with Vikalp feature

For passengers who still end up with RAC or a waitlisted tatkal ticket, IRCTC provides the Vikalp scheme, which can improve the likelihood of boarding by shifting such passengers to another train on the same route if seats are found later.

Booking a train ticket close to Diwali or Chhath Puja is challenging because most trains run full weeks in advance. Even the tatkal quota gets booked within minutes. For passengers who still end up with RAC or a waitlisted tatkal ticket, IRCTC provides the Vikalp scheme, which can improve the likelihood of boarding by shifting such passengers to another train on the same route if seats are found later.

What is the Vikalp scheme
Vikalp is an optional feature that allows IRCTC’s system to shift a waitlisted or RAC PNR to an alternate train running on the same route or station cluster at no extra cost. It does not guarantee confirmation but increases the probability. The new PNR is issued if allocation is successful. The alternate train may have a different boarding or terminating cluster station.

Before you book
Sign in: Open IRCTC app/website and log in.
Keep details ready: Passenger names/ages, ID type, preferred boarding/destination, and payment (UPI/NetBanking/card).
Know tatkal timing: Opens 10:00 AM for AC classes; 11:00 AM for non-AC (Sleeper/2S).
Search trains: Enter from–to stations and the correct date (Diwali is Monday, October 20, 2025).

Book tatkal and enable Vikalp
Choose class/quota: Select Tatkal; pick a train/class showing Available/RAC/WL.
Add passengers: Fill details, berth preference, and optional insurance.
Turn on Vikalp:

Toggle ‘Vikalp (Alternate Train Accommodation)’.
Select up to 7 alternate trains on the same route (order = your priority).
Review fare & boarding: Note that with Vikalp your boarding/destination may shift to a nearby cluster station.
Pay and confirm: Complete payment quickly (UPI is fastest). You’ll get a PNR and current status (CNF/RAC/WL).

After booking — how Vikalp works
Auto-allocation window: IRCTC may shift you to an alternate train from 30 minutes to 72 hours before your original train’s departure—at no extra cost.
New PNR via SMS/app: If shifted, you’ll receive the updated PNR/train/coach/berth.
Board the assigned train: Travel using the new PNR (carry ID).
Cancellation rules: If you cancel after being shifted, charges apply as per the new train’s status.
Refund nuance: If the alternate train’s fare is lower, no automatic refund. If you don’t travel on the shifted train, file a TDR for refund consideration.

Pro tips for higher success
Search with nearby cluster stations (e.g., source/destination metro area) to widen Vikalp options.
Avoid add-ons during payment to save seconds in tatkal.
If travelling in a group, book individually for at least one confirmed/RAC seat.
Keep checking PNR status in the IRCTC app until boarding.
