Apple’s Find My network has evolved into one of the company’s strongest security layers, and a lesser-known part of that system allows an iPhone to remain discoverable even after being switched off. Every model from the iPhone 11 onwards includes hardware that keeps broadcasting limited, encrypted location signals, giving users a real chance of recovering a device that has been lost or stolen.
Here is a clear look at how the feature works, how to check that it is active and the steps to follow if your phone ever goes missing.
How it works
Apple introduced low-power Bluetooth components in the iPhone 11 generation that continue operating briefly after shutdown. When Find My is turned on, any nearby Apple device can detect your powered-off phone and securely forward its location to iCloud without revealing identity information. Because the process is passive and encrypted, a thief cannot stop it simply by holding down the power button.
Users need to ensure Find My is properly enabled before relying on this safety net. Go to Settings, open your Apple ID profile, select Find My and then Find My iPhone. Make sure Find My iPhone, Find My network and Send Last Location are all active. You can verify support for powered-off tracking by opening Control Centre, pressing and holding the power slider and checking whether the message “iPhone Findable After Power Off” appears. If it does, your device remains traceable even when shut down.
Why it is important
Anyone with access to another Apple device can track a missing iPhone through the Find My app. After opening the app, switch to the Devices section and select the lost handset to view its latest position on the map. If you believe it is nearby, use Play Sound to force a loud alert, even if the iPhone was muted earlier.
If theft seems likely, Lost Mode adds an additional layer of protection. It locks the iPhone using the passcode, disables Apple Pay and allows you to display custom contact information on the screen. The Find My app can also guide you to the device’s last reported location.
Those without a second Apple product can still track the device through iCloud.com/find. After signing in, all linked devices appear with options for Lost Mode and remote erase. Two-factor authentication may make the login process harder without another trusted device available, but the web option remains a useful fallback.
Apple’s system is robust, but there is one potential weak point. Thieves can try to limit connectivity by opening Control Centre from the lock screen and switching on Airplane Mode. Users can block this by going to Settings, opening Face ID and Passcode and disabling Control Centre under the Allow Access When Locked section. It is a simple change that prevents quick attempts to break tracking.
