iFixit’s latest teardown of the iPhone Air has revealed that Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date is not only an engineering achievement but also impressively repairable. Despite its slim profile, the device maintains a practical design that keeps essential components accessible for future repairs.
As shown in Apple’s keynote, the interior of the iPhone Air is dominated by its battery. Most of the other components are packed neatly into the camera plateau at the top of the device. To give a closer look, iFixit published a 3D x-ray scan that highlights how the internal parts are arranged within the compact frame.
One of the biggest positives is how straightforward it is to replace the battery. Thanks to its metal casing and Apple’s electrically debonding adhesive strips, the swap process is safer and easier than in earlier generations. These adhesive strips, first introduced last year, can be released using a 12V battery, reducing the risk of puncturing the cell during replacement. This means even third-party repairs can be carried out with far less difficulty, an important step in extending the lifespan of the device.
Another highlight from the teardown is the modular USB-C port, which can be swapped out independently if it fails. This modularity ensures users and repair shops can fix one of the most commonly used and most failure-prone components without having to dismantle the rest of the phone. Additionally, the iPhone Air’s mid-frame design, introduced with the iPhone 14, allows repair technicians to access the internals without disturbing the OLED display. This significantly reduces the chances of accidental damage during disassembly.
In terms of overall repairability, iFixit awarded the iPhone Air a score of 7 out of 10. This puts it on par with the iPhone 16e and iPhone 16 Pro, which also received the same rating. It shows that even though Apple has pushed the boundaries of thin design, it has not compromised on the ability to repair the device.
Apple’s improved repair scores in recent years can also be linked to its ongoing self-service repair programme. By making genuine parts available individually and publishing official repair guides, the company has helped both consumers and independent shops handle common fixes. For users, this means fewer barriers to maintaining their devices and potentially extending their usability for years.
