Apple is gearing up for its “Awe Dropping” event on September 9, where the much-anticipated iPhone 17 lineup will debut. Among the models, the iPhone 17 Air is drawing the most attention, as leaks suggest it could become Apple’s first e-SIM-only device for global markets.

Apple has been experimenting with e-SIM-only models since the iPhone 14, which launched in the US without physical SIM support. Now, it seems the company is preparing to extend that strategy to international markets. According to a new report, Apple has instructed retail employees at Authorized Resellers in the EU to complete mandatory e-SIM training by September 5. While the directive specifically applies to Europe, the ultra-slim design of the iPhone 17 Air—just 5.5mm thick—may make it necessary to exclude a physical SIM slot worldwide.

The iPhone 17 Air is shaping up to be Apple’s thinnest and lightest iPhone ever, weighing under 150 grams. However, the sleek form factor will likely come with compromises. Reports suggest it will sport a single 48MP rear camera instead of a dual or triple setup, and a smaller battery to maintain its ultra-slim profile.

On the upside, Apple is expected to equip the phone with a 6.6-inch ProMotion OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, positioning it between the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max in size. A 24MP front camera is also expected, ensuring the device maintains strong performance for selfies and video calls.

If true, this move marks a significant shift in Apple’s global strategy. The company has long touted e-SIMs as more secure than physical cards, arguing they cannot be removed from a stolen phone. With global e-SIM adoption improving, the iPhone 17 Air could serve as Apple’s testbed before expanding the feature across its lineup.

Still, uncertainty remains whether this change will be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Air or extend to the Pro and Pro Max models. Either way, Apple’s rumored decision signals a bold step toward an all-digital future for mobile connectivity.
