Instagram is experimenting with a new feature that allows users to express discontent with comments on the platform. Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, announced the test in a recent update, stating that the feature is intended to improve the overall experience of conversations on the platform. “Some of you may have seen that we're testing a new button next to comments on Instagram - this gives people a private way to signal that they don’t feel good about that particular comment,” said Mosseri in a post on Threads.
The new button, which appears next to comments, enables users to let others know that they do not feel good about a particular remark. However, unlike traditional dislike buttons, this feature does not display a public count, and the comment’s author will not be notified if their comment has been disliked. Mosseri emphasised that the goal is to create a more positive and friendly space for interactions rather than introduce public negativity.
“This is a test, there is no dislike count, nor will anyone know if you tap the button,” Mosseri clarified. He further noted that, if successful, Instagram may integrate this feedback into its comment-ranking system, potentially moving disliked comments lower in the thread to reduce their visibility.
While the feature is still in its testing phase, its effectiveness in reducing negative interactions remains to be seen. If implemented successfully, it could serve as an important moderation tool. “Our hope is that this might help make comments more friendly on Instagram,” said Mosseri in his post.
