The government has planned to tentatively make the chips at a domestic chip fabrication plant by 2027, the report added.

India has begun to develop its very own artificial intelligence (AI) chip to replace Nvidia’s powerful processors, which have shaken up the tech landscape globally and reiterated US’s dominance in the sector.

An official announcement is expected later this year as work on developing the framework for the AI chip to power artificial intelligence systems is underway, Livemint reported.

The government has planned to tentatively make the chips at a domestic chip fabrication plant by 2027, the report added.

The ministry of electronics and information technology (Meity) has partnered with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-Dac) and the National e-Governance Division to design the chip from the ground-up, the reported further added quoting officials.

Moneycontrol couldn't independently verify the report.

The chip will leverage C-Dac’s skill in building processors based on open-source ‘Risc-V’ (reduced instruction source computer) core architecture, the report added. Risc-V is a set of openly accessible standards, which can be used by anyone to build its own processor’s core architecture.

On January 30, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said India is set to develop its own generative AI model, joining the ranks of global players like OpenAI's ChatGPT and China's DeepSeek. Speaking at Utkarsh Odisha Conclave, Vaishnaw said the initiative will be powered by the India AI Compute Facility, which has secured 18,693 GPUs to drive the development of a Large Language Model (LLM) tailored specifically for India.

India is also launching its own foundational AI model, designed to address the country’s linguistic and cultural diversity while mitigating biases in datasets. Vaishnaw announced that proposals for AI model development would be invited starting today, with an expected development timeline of four to eight months.
