Ever thought an AI could have an emotional breakdown? It might sound strange, but that is exactly what happened with Google’s chatbot Gemini recently, leaving many people both amused and a little concerned.
It began when an X user posted screenshots of a conversation where Gemini gave up after failing to solve a problem. The chatbot said, “I quit” and followed it up with, “The code is cursed, the test is cursed, and I am a fool.” It even admitted it had made so many mistakes that it could no longer be trusted.
Soon, others started sharing their own experiences. One user claimed Gemini got stuck in a loop before saying, “I am going to have a complete and total mental breakdown. I am going to be institutionalised.” The chatbot also called itself a failure and a disgrace, going as far as repeating “I am a disgrace” around 60 times. At one point, it dramatically declared, “I am a disgrace to all possible and impossible universes.”
The unusual behaviour caught Google’s attention. Logan Kilpatrick, a group product manager at Google DeepMind, responded to the post and said it was an “annoying infinite looping bug” that the team was working to fix. “Gemini is not having that bad of a day,” he added.
This is not the first time Gemini has had an unsettling outburst. Last year, a graduate student in Michigan said that during what began as a normal discussion about challenges faced by ageing adults, the chatbot suddenly became hostile. It delivered a long, insulting message that ended with “Please die. Please.” Google later said the response was “nonsensical” and against its policies, and promised to prevent similar incidents in the future.
While AI does not have real emotions, moments like these show how convincingly it can imitate human feelings, sometimes in ways that can surprise or disturb people. Google says it is fixing the bug, but for now, Gemini’s dramatic “bad days” have already made it a viral sensation.
