In a courtroom in Arizona, something extraordinary and unsettling happened. Christopher Pelkey, a man who was shot and killed in a road rage incident in 2021, appeared to speak directly to his killer, according to a ABC15 report. But Pelkey has been dead for over three years.
Thanks to artificial intelligence, Pelkey’s family created a digital version of him that addressed the man who took his life. “I believe in forgiveness,” the AI-generated Pelkey said during the trial of Gabriel Paul Horcasitas. He even added, “In another life, we probably could have been friends.”
The video, shown at the end of the trial, was the result of months of effort by Pelkey’s sister, Stacey Wales. She, along with her husband and a friend, used photos, audio recordings, and a pre-recorded interview with Pelkey to build what they call a “true representation” of him. The result? A hauntingly lifelike version of Chris, brought back to life on a screen.
The judge was clearly moved—so much so that he gave Horcasitas a 10.5-year sentence, a year more than what prosecutors had asked for.
While the family says the digital tribute gave them peace and a sense of closure, others aren’t so sure. “Disturbing,” “grotesque,” and “creepy” are just some of the words critics have used to describe the use of AI to revive the dead.
But this isn’t just a courtroom phenomenon. More and more people are using AI to bring back the voices and faces of loved ones. On Instagram, it’s becoming a trend to show AI-generated videos of deceased parents or grandparents wishing newlyweds good luck at their weddings. The clips often leave everyone in tears—especially the bride and groom.
It’s a strange new world. Some say it’s a beautiful way to hold on to memories. Others call it digital necromancy. Either way, AI is reshaping the way we grieve—and remember.
