OpenAI is deepening ChatGPT’s roots in macOS and recently rolled out new “Work with Apps” features designed to make the chatbot a more capable partner for coding, writing, searching, and app navigation — all without leaving your desktop environment.
Starting with version 1.2025.057, users can now summon ChatGPT across the system using Option + Space or via a new icon in the macOS menu bar. The update, available to free and paid users alike, enables ChatGPT to interact directly with running apps, including heavyweights like Xcode, Visual Studio Code, Android Studio, JetBrains IDEs, macOS Terminal, Notes, and even third-party tools like iTerm and Warp.
For developers, this integration goes beyond mere convenience. You can ask ChatGPT to propose or apply code edits directly within your IDE. Each change is previewed as a “diff,” giving you a chance to review before confirming — or hit Command-Z if you change your mind. You can also highlight specific code ranges to narrow ChatGPT’s focus.
Activating integration for certain apps, like Visual Studio Code, does require a dedicated extension. A full compatibility list is available under Settings → Work with Apps → Manage Apps.
Voice control sees a modest upgrade too: ChatGPT can now open or switch between apps on command, though full voice-based code editing remains absent. To activate a voice session, just click the wave icon in the chat bar.
Privacy remains a key concern. By default, your chats may be used to improve OpenAI’s models, though you can opt out in settings. Deleted conversations remain in OpenAI’s systems for 30 days before permanent removal. A Temporary Chat mode also lets you start from a clean slate, ignoring prior history entirely.
While full voice coding support is still pending, this update marks a major step toward making ChatGPT a true macOS co-pilot.
