How to stop disturbing and inappropriate content from appearing on your Instagram feed

Instagram users have recently reported an increase in disturbing and inappropriate content appearing in their feeds, even with Sensitive Content Control enabled. This could be due to changes in Instagram’s algorithm or a temporary glitch in its moderation system. While Instagram’s Community Standards remove outright harmful content, users can take additional steps to manage what they see. If you want to ensure that your feed is free from unwanted content, Instagram provides built-in features to limit exposure to sensitive material. Here’s how you can adjust these settings for a safer experience.

Instagram has multiple layers of content control to minimise exposure to sensitive content. The platform automatically removes content that violates its Community Standards, such as hate speech, graphic violence, or explicit material. Additionally, Instagram's Recommendation Guidelines restrict certain content from appearing in users’ feeds, even if it doesn’t break any rules.

One key tool Instagram provides is the Sensitive Content Control feature, which allows users to adjust their experience by limiting sensitive content in Reels, Explore, and other areas. By default, teen accounts (ages 13-17) have this setting on the most restrictive mode. Adults can choose between Standard (default setting) and Less (more restricted). Those over 18 may also opt for More to see additional sensitive content.

Ensure that your Instagram app is updated to the latest version.

You must be 18 or older to see the option to increase sensitive content.

Users aged 13-15 require parental permission to change the sensitivity level.

Open Instagram: Launch the Instagram app on your device.

Go to your profile: Tap on your profile picture or Profile in the bottom right corner.

Access settings: Tap on the Menu (three horizontal lines) in the top right corner.

Select content preferences: Choose Content Preferences and then tap Sensitive content.

Adjust sensitivity level:

Tap Less to see fewer sensitive posts.

Tap More (if eligible) to allow more sensitive content.

Confirm changes: Tap Confirm to save your preferences.

These changes will affect content recommendations across Explore, Search, Reels, comments, and suggested accounts. However, this setting does not override Instagram’s Community Standards, and posts violating these guidelines will still be removed. If you come across content that you believe is inappropriate, you can report it for further review by Instagram moderators.

By taking these steps, you can tailor your Instagram experience to minimize exposure to disturbing or sensitive content.
