Apple's latest iOS 18.2 update allows users to set third-party apps as their default calling and messaging apps. This means iPhone users can now choose WhatsApp instead of Apple's built-in Phone and Messages apps. Here’s how to enable this feature.
What’s new with WhatsApp on iPhone? With iOS 18.2, Apple has introduced support for third-party apps to function as the default dialer and messaging services. WhatsApp has now rolled out an update integrating this functionality, making it possible for users to set it as the primary app for making calls and sending messages.
How to set WhatsApp as the default calling and messaging appIf you want to use WhatsApp for calls and messages by default, follow these steps:
1. Update WhatsApp: Ensure your WhatsApp app is updated to the latest version from the App Store.
2. Open Settings: On your iPhone, navigate to the Settings app.
3. Go to Default Apps: Scroll down and tap on ‘Apps,’ then select ‘Default Apps.’
4. Select WhatsApp: Choose WhatsApp as the default app for both calling and messaging.
Note: You'll have to change the default app for calls and messages separately. You also have the option to choose one of the two options. Changing WhatsApp as the default app for calling will only change the default calling app and not the messaging app, and vice versa.
The update is rolling out in phases, so some users may not immediately see the option.
To use this feature, your iPhone must be running iOS 18.2 or later.
If you don’t see WhatsApp in the Default Apps section, check for any pending software updates on your iPhone and WhatsApp.
Why use WhatsApp as the default calling and messaging app?Setting WhatsApp as your primary communication app can streamline your experience, especially if you frequently use it for voice and text conversations. It also helps avoid unnecessary app switching, making communication more efficient.
As the rollout continues, more iPhone users can take advantage of this new functionality, further enhancing WhatsApp’s integration into the Apple ecosystem.
