The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced new guidelines to prevent errors caused by recycled or deactivated mobile numbers in UPI apps like GPay, Paytm, and BHIM. Banks and payment service providers must regularly update databases using the Mobile Number Revocation List. Users need to provide explicit consent to link or port their UPI Number, ensuring seamless transactions. Failure to update phone numbers may lead to account deactivation or payment issues. NPCI has mandated compliance by March 31, 2025, for all UPI service providers, enhancing security and user convenience in digital payments.

So, if you have not yet linked your phone number with the UPI app, here’s how to do it.

To make this easier, NPCI has also mandated it for UPI apps to enable the prompt in UPI apps, users must opt-in for linking or porting their UPI Number. Apps ensure clear, non-intrusive communication, preventing forced consent during transactions for a seamless experience.

Here’s how to do it.

Open the UPI app that you use (GPay, Paytm, etc)

Now, wait for the prompt to appear (usually, it is surfacing at the startup of the app)

Tap on the Continue button or follow the on-screen instructions (different apps have implemented different ways)

Once the linking process is complete, you are done with the process, and you can now send and receive payments using your phone number as well.

Now, if your phone number is already linked and updated, you are not supposed to take any additional action to keep your account active.
