Scam calls and messages are rising on WhatsApp and scammers are now using the platform to target people and dupe them financially.  Fraudsters are now reaching users through voice calls, video calls, and unwanted messages. Many of these scams involve unknown numbers impersonating brands or offering fake job opportunities and rewards. WhatsApp now includes a built-in setting to help you block such calls and reduce spam — if you know where to find it.

To curb scams on the platform, WhatsApp has introduced several new features, however, the ones that are most effective is the option to block calls and messages from unknown numbers. Here's a step-by-step guide for you.

How to silence unknown callers on WhatsApp

WhatsApp has introduced a privacy feature called “Silence Unknown Callers.” Once enabled, calls from numbers not saved in your contacts will no longer ring your phone. Instead, the call will be logged silently in your Calls tab.

This is particularly useful for preventing unsolicited scam calls that attempt to bypass your regular mobile settings by using WhatsApp’s VoIP feature.

Here’s how to enable it:
1. Open WhatsApp on your smartphone.
2. Tap the Settings icon (on iPhone) or the three-dot menu > Settings (on Android).
3. Go to Privacy > Calls.
4. Toggle on Silence Unknown Callers.

Your phone will no longer ring when unknown numbers call you via WhatsApp, but you’ll still see them in your call log if needed.

What about scam messages?

While WhatsApp does not offer a built-in way to block all messages from unknown numbers, you can still take action:
• When you receive a suspicious message, tap the contact, scroll down, and select Block and Report.
• You can also adjust your Privacy settings > Last Seen & Online, Profile Photo, and About to be visible only to contacts to reduce exposure to unknown users.

WhatsApp uses machine learning to flag suspicious accounts, but user reports play a vital role in identifying new scams.

Additional tip:

Be cautious when receiving messages from unknown numbers, especially those promising money, jobs, or requesting urgent actions. Never click unknown links or share OTPs and personal details.

Disclaimer: Enabling these features will completely block calls from unknown numbers. However, you'll see them in the call log of WhatsApp app in case of Android or in the call log of Dialer app on iPhone.
