How different is Elon Musk’s AI-powered Grokipedia from Wikipedia: 5 key differences

Elon Musk’s company xAI has launched Grokipedia, a free AI-powered encyclopedia to rival Wikipedia. Here’s how it differs from Wikipedia, explained through five different ways.

Grokipedia vs Wikipedia

Earlier this week, Elon Musk officially launched Grokipedia, an online encyclopedia built by his company xAI and powered by the Grok large language model. Styled unmistakably like Wikipedia, it differs from its more traditional counterpart in a variety of aspects. Moreover, Musk claims that Grokipedia has been created to provide a neutral and unbiased source of information, unlike Wikipedia, which he believes shows left-wing bias. Before you consider switching to this AI-based encyclopedia, here are a few key differences you need to know.

Editing implementation

Wikipedia has a simple editing mechanism, as any registered user can edit a Wikipedia page. Although some pages are restricted from new users to prevent any misinformation or vandalism, for the most part, any submitted changes will be verified by editors and automated systems to ensure accuracy. However, on Grokipedia, a user cannot directly make changes to any page. Instead, users can submit a request for changes through an on-screen feedback form, and if the application is approved, the change will be visible on the See Edits tab.

Article volume

Currently, Wikipedia has a total of 209 million pages across its various editions. In contrast, Grokipedia, at its launch, has around 885,000 articles, which are expected to grow rapidly as its AI system creates and updates content.

Language support

Wikipedia supports a total of 343 languages, whereas Grokipedia currently supports 47 different languages.

Operational model

Wikipedia is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation that is reliant on donations and volunteers to sustain operations. Meanwhile, Grokipedia is part of xAI, designed to integrate into AI training with open-source elements and computational transparency.

Update frequency

For Wikipedia, as the updates or changes to news depend on human editors, major updates to a continuing story can be slower, especially for breaking news. However, with Grokipedia, we get AI-powered near real-time updates, and content can be refreshed quickly based on live internet data.
