Google is rolling out new in-car app experiences for Android Auto, including support for web browsers and video streaming apps. The features were announced during the second day of Google I/O 2025 and are aimed at enhancing dashboard interactivity, though only while the vehicle is parked.

Video and browser support

According to Google, support for video and browser apps is “coming soon” to Android Auto, with availability restricted to parked vehicles. The company says this limitation is designed to prevent driver distraction. Initially, these features will roll out to Android 16 devices and select compatible cars, suggesting that hardware and dashboard compatibility may vary across manufacturers.

While full video playback will be limited to when the car is stationary, Google notes that drivers may be able to listen to video audio while on the move. However, this functionality remains in early access and is still under development in coordination with automakers and app developers.

Other updates for Android Auto

In addition to video and web browsing, Google has also opened the weather app category on Android Auto. Previously in beta, weather apps can now be developed and launched on the platform without needing specific Google approval. This change is expected to increase the number of weather apps available for in-car use.

Built-in Google dashboards

For vehicles that feature Google-built-in dashboards (not just Android Auto projection), the new app categories are even further along. The video app category is now open for developer submissions, while browser support has entered beta testing. This could mean faster access to these new features for select car models equipped with native Google services.

Gemini assistant coming soon

Google also confirmed that its Gemini AI assistant will be integrated into Android Auto in the coming months. Once available, Gemini will replace Google Assistant as the primary voice interface for dashboard interactions, offering AI-powered assistance for navigation, communication, and more.
