Google Pixel smartphones could soon get ‘AI Replies’ on their Phone app to generate new AI-powered smart replies based on what the caller has said. The feature was previously rolled out with Android 12 and allows users to filter calls and have the Google Assistant answer calls with an audio asking who is calling. Later in March this year, the feature was updated with additional contextual replies from Google Assistant.
Google Pixel smartphones to get ‘AI Replies’ on Call Screen
Last year, Google added the contextual replies feature to the Call Screen, which allows users to respond to the caller if they do not wish to answer a call. However, this feature is currently limited to certain smart replies and doesn’t understand if the caller has complicated needs.
However, according to an app teardown by Android Authority, the new ‘AI Replies’ will let the Call Screen feature suggest smart, context-aware responses based on the caller’s statements. This could make Call Screen even more effective for handling a variety of call scenarios.
These new AI Replies are being internally referred to as ‘dobby’ and powered by ‘dobby LLM.’ This could also be a codename for Google’s Gemini Nano, which powers AI features in Pixel 9 smartphones. Currently, Google has not shared any information on when AI Replies on the Call Screen might be released, but it’s expected to arrive with a future Pixel feature drop for select Google Pixel smartphones.
