Google’s new AI tool Whisk lets you create with Images, not just words

Google’s AI push continues as it has introduced a new image editing tool — Whisk — that lets users create visuals not only with text but also by using images. Unlike other tools that require long text descriptions to create images, Whisk uses images as your starting point. Think of it as a creative playground where you can mix and match elements to make something truly unique.

This tool is especially useful for designers who work extensively with images and need to extract and combine elements to create new visuals. Notably, the feature is not available for the Indian users. The feature has currently been rolled out in the US.

Here’s how it works

You can drag in different images — one for your main subject, another for the setting, and a third for the style. Whisk combines these to produce customised visuals, whether it’s a digital plushie, enamel pin, or sticker.

As per a blog post by Google, the “magic” happens behind the scenes with Google’s advanced AI models. First, Gemini, one of Google’s generative AI tools, analyses your uploaded images and writes a detailed description. Then, another model called Imagen 3 takes over, transforming those descriptions into completely new images. Whisk doesn’t create exact copies but instead captures the essence of your uploaded images. This means your subject might look slightly different in the generated image—it could have a different hairstyle, skin tone, or size.

If the result isn’t quite what you imagined, Whisk lets you tweak the descriptions it generates so you can refine your creation to better suit your vision.

Google notes in the blog that Whisk isn’t a traditional image editor. It’s designed to allow artists, designers, and anyone curious to explore dozens of creative ideas quickly.

Indian users might have to wait a bit before they try out the new AI tool by Google. But users in the US can try Whisk today by visiting labs.google/whisk. It’s part of Google Labs, the company’s space for testing experimental tools like NotebookLM and Imagen.
