After launching the Pixel 9 series last year, Google is now preparing to launch the Pixel 9a, which will have toned-down specs compared to the original series. The device has been spotted on a new certification website, hinting at its imminent launch, which could happen before March 2025. We can also expect the Pixel 9a to run on Android 15 out-of-the-box, and it might debut before the arrival of Android 16.
Google Pixel 9a set to release with Android 15 out of the box
Now, the Google Pixel 9a has been spotted on the EMVCo certification website and the listing reveals that the handset bears the model number GTF7P. Although the document was published on January 31, it not explicitly reveal the name of the smartphone. However, the document confirms that the phone will ship with Android 15 out-of-the-box, which is a big change from the Pixel 9 series, which came with Android 14 with the first boot.
Earlier last month, a report by Android Headlines suggested that Google may launch the Pixel 9a as early as March, making it the first budget Pixel A series smartphone to debut ahead of the company’s annual Google I/O event in May. The Pixel 9a is expected to sport a 6.3-inch Actua display, with 2,700nits peak brightness and Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
Moreover, the smartphone is likely to run on the latest Tensor G4 SoC along with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of inbuilt storage. It is also expected to have an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, and could be powered by a 5100 mAh battery. In terms of optics, the Pixel 9a could offer a 48MP primary camera and an 13MP ultrawide, similar to the Pixel 8a.
