A Reddit user has shared a terrifying experience of his Google Pixel 6a catching fire while he slept, just inches from his head. The phone was charging on his nightstand when it suddenly burst into flames in the middle of the night.

“I woke up to a loud noise and this horrible smell,” he wrote on Reddit. “The fire had already started. I grabbed the phone by its cord and threw it on the floor. My sheets caught fire.” His floor AC unit was also damaged, and he spent the day with a sore throat from inhaling smoke in the closed room.

The phone was barely 40 cm from his head when it caught fire. “I was lucky the battery side wasn’t facing me,” he added, sharing photos of the scorched device and fire damage.

He also mentioned he wasn’t in a region eligible for Google’s battery replacement program. Some had suggested his phone might have been part of a batch with known battery issues, but he said Google never clearly flagged it as a safety concern. “They called it a battery performance update — not a warning.”

The user is now trying to get in touch with Google support but says he’s only received vague responses through forums so far.

Google hasn’t made a public statement about this case yet, but the post has sparked concern among Pixel users about battery safety and communication.
