Google Photos is continuing its steady push into generative AI with the introduction of a new feature called Me Meme, now rolling out experimentally on Android and iOS in the US.
The idea is simple: Me Meme lets users “turn yourself into a meme” using AI. To get started, users select a meme template from Google Photos’ presets or upload a reference image of their own. From there, they choose a selfie or portrait where their face is clearly visible. Google recommends a well-lit, front-facing photo that’s in focus for best results.
Before generating the meme, users can make minor edits to the source image. Once created, the meme can be saved to the photo library, regenerated, or shared directly. Google also includes options to compare the original image with the AI-generated version and send feedback on the results.
A guided AI experience inside Google Photos
Unlike the standalone Gemini app, which can already generate images and memes with prompts, Google Photos is positioning Me Meme as a more guided and accessible experience. By embedding it directly into the Create tab, the company is clearly aiming to lower the barrier for casual users who may not want to experiment with prompts or open a separate app.
The “Me Meme” name itself feels intentionally designed for virality, aligning with how Google Photos has been reframing the Create tab as a hub for playful, shareable AI features. Me Meme now sits alongside tools such as Create with AI, Photo to video, Remix, Collage, Highlight video, Cinematic photo, and Animation.
At the moment, Me Meme is labelled as an experimental feature and appears to be rolling out gradually. It was not yet visible on all devices checked, and Google has not shared details on when it might expand beyond the US or exit testing.
