Google has asked hundreds of employees from its Platforms and Devices unit — the team behind Android software, Pixel phones, and the Chrome browser to leave. The news was first reported by The Information, citing someone with direct knowledge of the matter.

These job cuts come just months after Google offered voluntary buyouts to workers in the same unit back in January.

A Google spokesperson confirmed the move, saying, “Since combining the Platforms and Devices teams last year, we’ve focused on becoming more nimble and operating more effectively, and this included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January.”

The company hasn’t revealed how many roles were impacted, but the decision is part of Google’s effort to streamline its operations and cut down on costs. Like many tech giants, Google has been rethinking its team structures in recent months.
