Google is reportedly dropping an artificial intelligence-powered search feature that surfaced crowdsourced medical advice from users, following scrutiny over the reliability of AI-driven health information.

The feature, known as “What People Suggest,” was designed to show insights and tips from individuals with similar health conditions, using AI to organise discussions from online forums into simplified summaries. It was introduced as part of Google’s broader push to integrate AI into search and improve how users access health-related information.

However, The Guardian has reported that the feature has now been removed, according to multiple reports and people familiar with the matter. A Google spokesperson confirmed the decision, stating that the removal was part of a broader effort to simplify the search experience. The company maintained that the decision was not related to concerns about the feature’s quality or safety.

The move comes at a time when Google is facing increased scrutiny over its use of AI in health-related queries. Earlier investigations had raised concerns about misleading or inaccurate information being generated through AI summaries, particularly in sensitive areas such as medical advice. These AI Overviews, which appear above standard search results, are used by billions of users globally each month.

Google had earlier positioned the “What People Suggest” feature as a way to complement expert-backed information with lived experiences. The company argued that users often look for personal perspectives alongside clinical guidance, especially when dealing with chronic conditions.

Despite that intent, critics have questioned whether presenting aggregated advice from non-experts could lead to confusion or potential harm. The removal of the feature suggests a shift in approach as Google continues to refine how AI is integrated into its search ecosystem.

Google has said it will continue to focus on providing reliable health information from a mix of authoritative sources, while still allowing access to forum-based discussions where relevant
