Google I/O 2025 is just hours away, and there is a lot to look forward to this time. The tech giant is expected to announce a series of software updates and exciting new features across its platforms but don’t expect a big hardware showcase this time. After previewing some updates for Android 16 and Wear OS 6 last week, Google is now shifting its focus almost entirely to artificial intelligence (AI).
When and where to watch the event
The opening keynote kicks off today, May 20, at 10 AM PT which is 10:30 PM IST. You can watch the livestream on Google’s I/O website or its official YouTube channel. There’s also an ASL version available for accessibility.
AI is expected to be the focus
AI is expected to dominate the keynote this year. With tech rivals like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta pushing the boundaries of AI, Google is ready to respond with big updates to its Gemini AI. New features for phones and other devices are likely, and fans are hoping to see ambitious updates under Project Astra, which hints at the more futuristic side of Google’s AI vision.
Gemini has already started integrating into Google services, and today we’ll likely see just how far Google is planning to take that integration.
While AI is the main focus, Google has also teased updates related to Android XR, its extended reality platform. Last week’s Android Show didn’t offer much detail, but Android lead Sameer Samat hinted we’ll get a better look at Google’s prototype smart glasses today. This could be crucial, especially as Samsung prepares to launch its own XR headset later this year.
No new devices to be announced
Unlike past I/O events, don’t expect flashy new Pixel phones, tablets, or Nest devices. Google seems to be saving those announcements for another time, likely to keep the spotlight on its AI and software developments. The only possible hardware news might come from the XR segment.
