Google has introduced a new productivity-focused feature in its Gemini app, called Scheduled Actions. Rolled out on June 10, the feature is currently available for users subscribed to premium tiers—Google AI Pro, Google AI Ultra, and select Google Workspace business and education accounts. The update was first announced at Google’s I/O 2024 developer conference and marks a major addition to the app’s AI-driven utility.
What is the Scheduled Actions feature?Scheduled Actions enable Gemini users to automate certain tasks at predefined times. Instead of repeatedly asking Gemini to perform routine actions, users can now schedule tasks once and have them executed automatically by the AI assistant. This transforms Gemini from a reactive chatbot into a more proactive personal assistant.
How it worksUsers can set up tasks such as receiving a daily digest of unread emails and calendar appointments each morning or generating fresh content ideas—like five blog topics—every Monday. The feature supports recurring and one-time scheduled events. Users interested in sports can receive match updates on game days, while others may schedule Gemini to send award show summaries the next morning.
The Scheduled Actions can be set and managed through a dedicated section in the Gemini app’s settings. Google says this setup is designed to reduce repetitive interactions while keeping users organised and informed.
Who can access it?The feature is currently limited to premium users only. This includes subscribers of Google AI Pro and Ultra plans, as well as selected enterprise and education Google Workspace accounts. Google has not confirmed whether the feature will roll out to all users in the future.
Why it mattersWith Scheduled Actions, Google is clearly targeting productivity enhancements. Automating regular updates means users don’t have to rely on manual prompts, saving time and effort. It also shows Google’s intent to differentiate its AI assistant from others by emphasising context-aware task execution, which goes beyond text generation.
More updates in testingSeparately, Google is reportedly testing another AI-powered feature in its mobile Search app—short summaries of weather conditions. These summaries appear between standard forecast sections and provide quick insights into rain probability, wind speeds, and temperature patterns. The feature is currently limited to a small number of users in the US.
