When Samsung introduced Galaxy AI on the Galaxy S24, the focus was on a handful of assistive features like live translation and Circle to Search. A year later, the company says AI has become a core layer that runs through calling, messaging, browsing, and even personalisation on its smartphones. At the centre of this evolution is Samsung R&D Institute India – Bangalore (SRI-B), one of the company’s largest global R&D hubs.

Mohan Rao Goli, CVP and Managing Director of SRI-B, told Moneycontrol that the real value of AI lies not just in advanced features, but in how it enhances the basic functions of a smartphone.

“AI is improving calling, messaging, and browsing for Indian users”
“Calling, messaging, browsing, and connecting are all part of what we call native experiences,” Rao said. “If AI improves these daily native experiences, people will like it and their productivity will improve.”

He explained that one of the standout use cases is improving call quality in noisy environments. “When you are having a meaningful conversation and suddenly there’s a lot of background noise, you just click on Voice Focus and get crystal-clear voice quality,” he said.

AI also ensures conversations become more useful. “We have AI running on the call transcriber—during conversations, you may be making commitments, and at the end of the call, AI can generate a summary. That helps you remember and organise better.”

Messaging and browsing have seen similar integration. “You may get a long message or a big article in the browser. AI can summarise it. Or if you want to reply to a message, Smart Reply can suggest responses,” Rao explained.

SRI-B’s wider contributions
Beyond communication, SRI-B has helped shape Galaxy AI features across Samsung’s premium devices. “For the Fold 7 and Flip 7, we worked on camera features like auto-transition between sensors, AI wallpapers that adapt around widgets, and the audio eraser that lets you adjust background sound levels in videos,” Rao said.

The India focus remains strong. Samsung Wallet integrates UPI for Indian users. Voice Focus, too, is highly relevant here, given the noisy environments we live in. With SmartThings, our customised cooling solution ensures better sleep in Indian summers,” he added.
