Deepseek, the Hangzhou-based start-up captured the world’s attention over the past few weeks after releasing two advanced open-source AI models, DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1. A big reason why Deepseek caught the eye was how it developed those models at a fraction of the cost and computing power that major tech companies typically require. Now, it seems like the automakers in China want to bring Deepseek AI in their cars.

According to a report by South Morning China Post, over the past two weeks, more than a dozen automakers, including EV giant BYD and Stellantis-backed startup Leapmotor, have revealed plans to integrate DeepSeek AI technology into their vehicles.

In a recent announcement, Chinese automaker BYD revealed plans to integrate DeepSeek’s AI technology into its Xuanji vehicle software platform. BYD wants to improve the AI capabilities of its cars and plans to use Deepseek’s AI technology. BYD also said that it is committed to offering basic self-driving features at no additional cost across nearly its entire lineup.

BYD, a prime rival to Tesla, intends to roll out its proprietary ADAS technology in at least 21 models, including its affordable Seagull hatchback, which starts at just 69,800 yuan (US$9,575), as per the report.

The system will enable functions such as highway navigation and automated parking, bringing semi-autonomous driving to a wider range of consumers.

BYD is not the only one looking to integrate Deepseek’s AI tech. Other major Chinese automakers, including Geely, Great Wall Motor, Chery Automobile, and SAIC Motor, have announced plans to use DeepSeek’s technology. These companies, according to the report, plan to incorporate the AI platform into their digital cockpit systems, aiming to attract tech-savvy drivers in mainland China.

A recent report by research firm IDC, highlighted that end users are becoming increasingly capable of deploying, training, and utilising large language models, which will further accelerate the adoption of AI-driven solutions in the automotive sector.
