Flipkart announces Black Membership with free YouTube Premium, additional offers and more

Flipkart has introduced a new membership programme in India called Flipkart Black, positioned as a premium subscription to rival Amazon Prime. The membership includes multiple benefits such as early access to sales, exclusive discounts, priority customer support, and a free one-year YouTube Premium subscription.

Price in India

Flipkart Black is priced at Rs. 1,499 per year, but as part of an introductory offer, it is currently available for Rs. 990 annually. This makes it costlier than Flipkart’s existing VIP plan, which is available at Rs. 799 per year, and above its loyalty programme Flipkart Plus, which has Silver and Gold tiers based on user orders.

Features and benefits

The biggest highlight of the Flipkart Black membership is the bundled YouTube Premium subscription worth Rs. 1,490, offering ad-free video streaming, background play, and offline downloads. The subscription is valid for one year and can be linked to a single YouTube account.

Apart from this, Flipkart Black members will get 5 percent SuperCoins cashback of up to Rs. 100 on every Flipkart and Flipkart Minutes order, along with the option to earn up to 800 SuperCoins monthly. These SuperCoins can be redeemed as rupee-equivalent discounts or cashback on orders.

Subscribers will also receive an extra 5 percent discount on SuperCoins transactions capped at Rs. 1,000. Additional perks include exclusive deals on premium electronics, early access to Flipkart sale events, and 24x7 priority customer service.

The membership extends to travel benefits as well, offering flight cancellation and rescheduling on Cleartrip at just Re. 1. However, Flipkart has clarified that the subscription fee is non-refundable and cannot be cancelled once purchased.

Competition

With this new plan, Flipkart is targeting Amazon’s Prime membership, which costs Rs. 1,499 annually and includes Prime Video and early sale access. Given Amazon has introduced ads on Prime Video, Flipkart is banking on YouTube Premium’s ad-free streaming as an alternative entertainment benefit for users.
