The Government of India has issued a fresh advisory warning citizens about fraudulent DigiLocker applications circulating on app stores. The alert, shared by the official Digital India handle on X (formerly Twitter), cautions users to verify the authenticity of the app before downloading, as multiple fake versions are attempting to impersonate the official DigiLocker service.

The advisory highlights that these fake apps are designed to mislead users and potentially compromise sensitive personal data. DigiLocker, an initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), serves as a digital document wallet for citizens. It stores verified documents such as Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, driving licences, vehicle registration certificates, academic records and more. With such critical documents at stake, downloading counterfeit apps poses a significant privacy and security risk.
According to the post, users who may have mistakenly downloaded a suspicious app are advised to delete it immediately and change passwords for any linked accounts. The government has stressed that the only legitimate DigiLocker app is developed by the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), Government of India.
Additional details shared in the accompanying graphic reinforce the official identifiers:
Official app name: DigiLocker
Official developer: National e-Governance Division (NeGD), Government of India
Official website: https://www.digilocker.gov.in
The advisory also urges users to rely solely on official links available through government websites and to avoid downloading apps from unknown developers or third-party app stores.
The shared graphic showcases the authentic DigiLocker interface, depicting features such as issued documents, Aadhaar integration, and services including PAN verification, vehicle registration, National Health ID, and LIC policy access. The visual aims to help users recognise the legitimate layout of the real app and avoid falling for imitations.
With cyber fraud incidents on the rise, the government reiterates the need for digital vigilance. Users are encouraged to double-check the source before installing government service apps and report any suspicious listings found on app stores.
The real DigiLocker app is available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store through verified links only.
