Elon Musk-owned social media platform X has rolled out an update to its ‘For You’ tab that allows users to select broad content topics to shape what appears in their recommended feed. The feature was confirmed by Elon Musk, who said users can now tap on the For You section and choose general interests such as “Technology” after updating the app.
The change marks a shift from a fully algorithm-driven timeline to a system that gives users more direct control over the kind of content they see each day.
How the new For You topic selection works
With the latest app version, users can open the For You feed and pick from broad topic categories. Once selected, the recommendation system prioritises posts related to those interests instead of mixing in unrelated or trending content.
For example, users interested in technology can receive more updates about gadgets, artificial intelligence, startups, and software, while seeing fewer posts about politics, entertainment, or viral debates.
The update is designed to sit alongside existing following-based timelines, offering an alternative way to browse content without needing to follow individual accounts.
Why X is changing content discovery
Since its transition under X, the platform has been experimenting with how users interact with recommended posts. The For You feed has become the primary content surface for many users, often driving engagement through algorithmic suggestions.
By introducing topic-level filtering, X appears to be responding to user feedback around feed relevance, content overload, and unwanted political or controversial material.
The feature also aligns with broader industry trends where social platforms are offering more feed customisation, allowing users to control algorithms rather than relying on fully automated ranking systems.
The topic-based For You feed may help users spend less time scrolling through unrelated posts and more time engaging with content that matches their interests. It could also reduce frustration around sudden topic shifts inside the timeline.
At the same time, the change raises questions about content diversity, as users may increasingly remain within specific interest bubbles instead of encountering a wide range of viewpoints.
For now, the feature is rolling out gradually and requires the latest app update to appear, with more topic categories expected to expand over time.
