In a major disappointment to those looking forward to the single-player Black Panther game being co-developed by Cliffhanger Games and Marvel Games, publisher Electronic Arts (EA) has revealed that it has cancelled the Black Panther game and has even closed down Cliffhanger Games, as per a report by IGN, based on an email to the staff by EA Entertainment president Laura Miele.
First announced in 2023, the now-cancelled Black Panther game would have been the first to feature the Wakandan superhero in a single-player adventure. That won’t be happening now.
However, “at least three” games Electronic Arts has partnered with Marvel for are currently confirmed to be under development and none of them is under threat of cancellation, as per another report by IGN, based on statements given to the publication by EA Entertainment president and a Marvel spokesperson.
The Marvel spokesperson’s statement reads: "The multi-title, long-term relationship between Marvel Games and EA, a creative collaboration focused on original storytelling with various, beloved Marvel characters, remains strong. Development of our console and PC titles, beginning with Marvel's Iron Man, is led by Motive Studios."
EA and Marvel had announced a three-game deal in 2023. Two games of the three were revealed then: Marvel’s Iron Man and the untitled single-player Black Panther game. Details about the third were kept under wraps.
Upon being asked if there were still at least three Marvel games under development right now, the Marvel spokesperson confirmed to IGN that that was the case.
EA has cancelled multiple in-development projects this year, like the new Titanfall game, resulting in hundreds of job losses. Before the Black Panther game got axed, EA had laid off over 300 employees in April. EA is also ending its partnership with the WRC, which means more job cuts.
If you are feeling let down by the Black Panther cancellation, there is still some hope, and you might get a chance to play another in-development Black Panther title, albeit it has been delayed. Also, it features three other playable characters apart from Black Panther, including Captain America. We are referring to Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, which has seen a delay and won’t be coming out until next year. Another key difference is that instead of T’Challa, it features the World War 2 era Black Panther Azzuri, who is T’Challa’s grandfather
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is an upcoming single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure role-playing ensemble game that’s being co-developed by Skydance New Media and Marvel Games. In this title, you will play as one of the four characters at a time at different points in the story. The four playable characters include Captain America (a young Steve Rogers), the World War 2 era Black Panther (T’Challa’s grandfather Azzuri), Gabriel Jones and Nanali.
