Elon Musk has reignited his long-standing feud with Meta, this time taking a direct swipe at Instagram. In a recent reply to a user posting about deleting Instagram for good, Musk declared that “this is the only way” doubling down on his disdain for Meta’s social media empire. This isn’t new territory for the Tesla and X CEO, who famously urged people to delete Facebook years ago, calling it “lame” and accusing the platform of “destroying freedom.”
Musk’s animosity towards Facebook dates back to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, after which he ordered Tesla and SpaceX’s official pages to be removed from the platform. Since then, he has been consistently vocal about Meta’s influence on public discourse and privacy practices. With Instagram now in his crosshairs, Musk seems to be extending that crusade, possibly fuelled by the rivalry between X (formerly Twitter) and Meta’s Threads.
While Instagram remains one of the most popular social media platforms globally, Musk’s comments resonate with ongoing concerns about mental health, algorithmic manipulation, and the addictive design of social apps. His critique is part tech leader commentary, part personal vendetta against Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, with whom he has exchanged numerous jabs over the years—sometimes even proposing a cage fight.
Ironically, Musk’s own platform, X, has been pushing deeper into algorithm-driven feeds and content recommendations, leading some to accuse him of fighting the very tactics he adopts. Yet, Musk frames his stance as a philosophical difference: advocating for platforms that amplify public discourse versus those that promote superficial engagement.
