OpenAI says its flagship AI chatbot ChatGPT is on track to reach 700 million weekly active users, marking another major growth milestone for what’s now one of the world’s fastest-growing consumer apps.
According to Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP and head of the ChatGPT app, the chatbot had already touched 500 million weekly users by March-end. In a recent post on X, he shared that usage has grown fourfold over the past year.
“Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving harder problems. Big week ahead. Grateful to the team for making ChatGPT more useful and delivering on our mission so everyone can benefit from AI,” Turley posted.
This spike in popularity came after OpenAI rolled out upgraded image-generation capabilities in March, built on the GPT-4 model. By early April, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap revealed that users had already generated over 700 million images within just a few days of launch.
The company’s paid offering has also seen an uptick. Lightcap recently said that ChatGPT now has 5 million paying business users, up from 3 million in June.
Separately, a report by Sensor Tower highlighted that ChatGPT is now among the top apps in terms of user engagement. In the first half of 2025, users spent an average of 16 minutes per day on the app, using it over 12 days a month on average—ranking just behind Google and X.
