ChatGPT has reached a big milestone, it now gets 1 billion search requests a day, as per a report by Phone Arena. That’s impressive on its own, but what’s even more surprising is that it got there 5.5 times faster than Google did when it was starting out.
Of course, Google is still miles ahead. It handles 13.5 billion searches every day, making it the clear leader. Other popular platforms like Instagram (6.5 billion), Baidu (5 billion), Snapchat (4 billion), and Amazon (3.5 billion) also see more daily searches than ChatGPT. Still, for an AI tool that’s only been around for a short time, reaching this level so quickly is no small feat.
The data, shared by NP Digital, shows just how quickly people are warming up to using AI to find answers. ChatGPT now ranks 12th in daily searches, tying with TikTok. That’s pretty remarkable considering how new it is compared to the giants it’s up against.
Interestingly, the report also points out that 60% of Google searches end without people clicking on any link. That’s because Google now shows many answers right on the search page through things like short summaries or AI-powered results so users don’t always need to go to another website. In a way, that’s similar to how ChatGPT works: it just gives you the answer right there.
Experts say that for ChatGPT to truly compete with Google, it’ll need to show up in more places like browsers, apps, and devices and get better at pulling in the latest information from the web. And most importantly, more people need to feel confident using AI instead of search engines.
So while ChatGPT isn’t replacing Google just yet, it’s clear that the way we search is starting to change — and fast.
