ChatGPT now lets Indian users pick from eight personalities after GPT 5.1 update

OpenAI has rolled out upgraded ChatGPT personalities to users in India, giving them eight options to change the chatbot’s tone and style. First spotted by Gadgets 360, the feature has been refreshed with the GPT 5.1 model. Users can now switch between Friendly, Professional, Quirky and more.

OpenAI has started rolling out a refreshed ChatGPT personalities feature to users in India, giving people more control over how the chatbot sounds and behaves. As reported by Gadgets 360, many users saw a pop-up on ChatGPT’s home page on Wednesday announcing the update. The message explained that they can now choose from different personality types to change the tone and style of the chatbot’s responses.

Personalities are not brand new. OpenAI first introduced them earlier this year, but the recent upgrade to the GPT 5.1 model has made these modes more expressive and consistent. Earlier, users could only adjust ChatGPT’s “vibe” by typing a long instruction. Now, the feature is built directly into the interface and stays active throughout the conversation, even when users start a new chat.

In India, ChatGPT now offers eight preset personalities. These include:

Default, Professional (polished and precise), Friendly (warm and chatty), Candid (direct and encouraging), Quirky (playful and imaginative), Efficient (short and to the point), Nerdy (curious and enthusiastic), and Cynical (sharp and sarcastic). This means users no longer need to tell ChatGPT “act like a friendly assistant” or “give me concise answers.” One tap switches the bot’s entire style.

According to Gadgets 360, many of these presets have been updated and renamed after the GPT 5.1 release. For example, “Listener” is now “Friendly” and “Robots” has become “Efficient.” Three new modes — Professional, Candid, and Quirky — have also been added. OpenAI says the feature only affects tone, not the model’s intelligence or capability.

What makes this feature useful is that it meets people where they are. Someone writing for work may want a more formal tone, while someone learning a new topic may prefer the chatty, friendly style. A nerdy mode might work well for deep explanations, and a cynical mode might help users stress test an idea.

The update comes at a time when OpenAI is reportedly preparing more releases. Some reports suggest a GPT 5.2 model could be announced soon, which may further improve these personalities or even introduce new ones.

For now, users in India can try the feature from ChatGPT’s Settings and switch personalities anytime. It’s a small change, but one that instantly makes the chatbot feel more personal and adaptable.
