ChatGPT goes down as users face issues, OpenAI says fix is coming soon

ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, experienced a global outage on December 11, 2024. The outage began around 7 PM ET (5:30 AM IST) and affected millions of users worldwide.

As per Downdetector, close to 74% users weren’t able to access ChatGPT. Most users on social media said that they got an error message which stated that the service was temporarily unavailable.

OpenAI took to social media platform X and acknowledged the issue.“We're experiencing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix. Sorry and we'll keep you updated!,” posted the company.

In another status update, OpenAI apologised for the downtime. "We are working as fast as we can to return service to normal and apologize for the downtime," said OpenAI.

Moneycontrol tried to access ChatGPT on web and the Mac app and we were able to use the chatbot. OpenAI has clarified that it is bringing back traffic by region. "We are continuing to work towards remediation. API traffic recovery is ongoing and we are bringing ChatGPT traffic back up by region. Sora is partially beginning to recover," said OpenAI on its status page.

Late last night, Meta's popular apps also went down. In India, approximately 31,000 users reported issues with Instagram, while 30,500 users faced problems with WhatsApp. The United States saw over 97,000 reports of problems related to Facebook and Instagram.

In India, as per Downdetector, Instagram was down between 11 pm to 3am. The services are back now.
