ChatGPT can do a lot of things -- from writing codes analyse/generate images, summarise reports, and even respond to queries. Recently it also got the capabilities to help users shop. So, is there anything that it literally can't do and the simple answer would be -- yes. But, if you are thinking that it is a complex task that ChatGPT may fail at, then you are mistaken. What ChatGPT struggles at is telling the current time — the OpenAI chatbot still falls short. During our test, ChatGPT repeated a familiar limitation: it does not have access to a real-time system clock and therefore cannot display the current time unless given external context.
What ChatGPT said when asked for the time
When we asked ChatGPT on the desktop app, “What time is it right now?”, it responded with a clear disclaimer: it does not have access to the system clock and cannot see real-time data. The chatbot instead informed us that our account timezone is IST (UTC+05:30) and advised checking the device’s clock for the exact time. But, can it answer time correctly?
The answer is Yes. It can tell the time -- provided -- you select the 'Search' option from the text box and then ask the query. We tried doing it and ChatGPT did respond to the “What time is it right now?” query correctly.
Why ChatGPT behaves this way
Experts explain that the restriction is intentional. AI robotics expert Yervant Kulbashian, speaking to The Verge, compared a language model to a “castaway on an island with books but no watch.” The model works only with the information inside its language space unless explicitly connected to external tools.
Giving AI constant access to real-time data can create technical challenges. ChatGPT operates with a context window — the space where active information is stored. If the model were to check the system clock repeatedly, each timestamp would add noise and potentially disrupt ongoing responses, Kulbashian said.
OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson confirmed this design choice, noting that ChatGPT’s underlying models don’t have built-in access to real-time information. When needed, ChatGPT relies on search to fetch current data, and OpenAI is working on making this behaviour more consistent.
How other chatbots compare
Unlike ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot, and xAI’s Grok can show the exact time the moment they are asked. That’s because these platforms are configured to automatically access system-level time or perform instant web checks without user prompting.
Interestingly, some desktop instances of ChatGPT can display the time when system permissions or search functions are manually enabled, demonstrating that the capability exists — but is not universally active.
So, can ChatGPT reliably answer “What time is it right now?” The short answer: not by default. Unless provided with the time or given explicit access to system tools, ChatGPT continues to rely on the user’s device for real-time accuracy.
