2024 was undeniably an eventful year for the social media platform BlueSky, as it gained millions of new users, necessitating the firm to ramp up its moderation efforts. BlueSky was initially available for new users with its invite-only system and rapidly grew its user base after many social media users fled from Elon Musk’s post the US presidential election.
BlueSky’s 2024 moderation report: Key highlightsAccording to the moderation report from BlueSky, the social media platform received about 6.48 million reports from users, which is a 17x increase from 2023, when users submitted just under 360,000 reports. This has also led to the rise of harmful content on BluSky. The social media platform also added over 23 million users in 2024, as Bluesky became the go-to destination for former Twitter/X users for various reasons.
Bluesky also increased its moderation team to roughly 100 moderators and is continuing to hire. Starting this year, Bluesky will also begin to accept moderation reports directly from its app, similar to X. It will allow users to track actions and updates more easily. Further, the firm plans on making some changes to the way reports and appeals are handled this year, and it will provide users with better communication efforts by providing updates about actions it has taken on the content they’ve reported and other spam filter processes.
In 2024, Bluesky moderators took down 66,308 accounts, while its automated systems took down 35,842 bot or spam accounts. Moreover, Bluesky wants the social media platform to be a safe, transparent, and responsive platform.
