Apple’s new iOS 26.2 sleep score feels more honest, here's why

Apple’s latest iOS 26.2 and watchOS 26.2 betas introduce a subtle but meaningful update to one of the Health app’s most talked-about features — Sleep Score. While the underlying metrics remain the same, Apple has refined how those scores are graded, and the result already feels more accurate and realistic.

Sleep Score was one of two major health-focused additions that arrived with iOS 26, using three factors — Duration, Bedtime Consistency, and Interruptions — to assess your nightly rest. But as Apple gathered user feedback, it became clear that the grading system didn’t always align with how people actually felt about their sleep.

In iOS 26.2, Apple has adjusted the tone and thresholds of its Sleep Score ratings. The top grade, previously labelled “Excellent,” has been replaced with “Very High” — a deliberate shift away from what sounded like a value judgment. Grades overall have also been tightened, making higher scores slightly harder to achieve. The goal: to make the results more objective and emotionally neutral.

After a week of use, these tweaks appear to work. The updated system feels more honest, particularly for nights disrupted by multiple wake-ups or inconsistent sleep. For instance, under the old grading method, nights with frequent interruptions could still earn a “High” score simply because the total sleep duration was solid. Now, with iOS 26.2, those nights are rightly marked as “OK,” offering a result that better reflects the actual experience.

While these refinements may frustrate users who enjoyed seeing “Excellent” more often, the new grading system brings Apple’s sleep tracking closer to real-life perception. It’s not a radical overhaul, but it’s a smarter, more balanced approach — one that users are likely to find more credible when iOS 26.2 rolls out widely next month.
