Apple is marking the fortieth anniversary of its accessibility efforts with a new film that brings the experiences of students with disabilities into focus. Accessibility has always been a core value for Apple, and its latest short aims to show what that looks like for students navigating everything from lectures to late night hangouts.

The film follows disabled students from around the world as they use Apple’s built-in accessibility tools to take part in college life. Apple’s message is clear. Education is not limited to academic work. It is also shaped by independence, confidence, friendships and the ability to explore new skills. For disabled students, these moments depend on the right tools being available at every step.

Key accessibility features

A range of features across the Apple ecosystem appears throughout the short. VoiceOver and Magnifier help students use their iPhone, iPad and Mac more independently. Braille Access supports reading and writing. AssistiveTouch on both Apple Watch and iPad enables alternative ways to control devices. Accessibility Reader, Sound and Name Recognition and Live Captions provide support in social settings and during everyday tasks. Apple frames these features not as add-ons but as essential design choices that support learning, socialising and personal growth.

The new film is directed by Kim Gehrig, who previously created Apple’s Emmy winning accessibility short “The Greatest” in 2022. This year’s piece takes a more celebratory turn, built around a musical number performed by Deaf and disabled students. The song comes from Tony Award winner Tim Minchin, adding a theatrical flair to the milestone.

Disability representation and accessibility have been priorities for Apple in its creative work for years. In the past years, there have been  campaigns such as Taika Waititi’s “The Lost Voice,” “The Relay,” the Emmy nominated “Heartstrings,” and the recent Parkinson’s focused series “No Frame Missed.”
