Apple is planning a significant overhaul of Siri that would transform the long-standing digital assistant into the company’s first true AI chatbot, according to a new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The change is expected to debut as part of iOS 27 and macOS 27, marking a major pivot in Apple’s AI strategy.
Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that Apple is developing a new version of Siri, internally codenamed “Campos,” which will replace the existing Siri experience across the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. While users will summon it the same way they do today, either by saying “Siri” or holding the side button, the interaction model will be fundamentally different.
Unlike the current Siri, which relies heavily on predefined commands and short responses, the new version is said to adopt a conversational, chatbot-style interface similar to ChatGPT. This would allow for more fluid, multi-step interactions and ongoing context within a session, something Siri has historically struggled with.
The revamped Siri is expected to be revealed at WWDC in June and released later in the year, alongside Apple’s annual software updates in September. While Apple is planning incremental improvements to Siri and Apple Intelligence in iOS 26, those updates will reportedly retain the existing Siri interface and lean on Google’s Gemini models for enhanced intelligence. The more ambitious chatbot overhaul appears to be reserved for iOS 27.
According to Gurman, the new Siri will be capable of searching the web, creating content, generating images, summarising information, and analysing uploaded files. It will also make deeper use of personal data, allowing users to more easily find specific files, songs, calendar entries, or messages, and then act on them.
One of the most notable changes is how deeply Siri will be integrated into Apple’s core apps. Bloomberg says the assistant will work across Mail, Music, Podcasts, TV, Photos, and even Xcode. For example, users could ask Siri to locate a photo based on its contents and edit it with specific instructions, or draft an email based on upcoming calendar events, all using natural language.
Both text and voice input will be supported, with a greater sense of continuity between interactions. While Siri already supports typed queries, the lack of persistent context has limited its usefulness compared to modern AI chatbots.
Publicly, Apple has previously played down the idea of adding a standalone chatbot interface to Siri. However, this reported shift suggests the company now sees a more conversational AI as essential to keeping pace in a market increasingly shaped by generative models.
If the report is accurate, iOS 27 could represent a long-overdue reset for Siri, and Apple’s clearest signal yet that it intends to compete more seriously in the AI assistant race.
