Apple may power upgraded Siri with Google Gemini AI

Apple’s upcoming Siri overhaul could use Google’s Gemini AI models to enhance its capabilities, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The company, often criticised for lagging behind in AI development, delayed its long-awaited Siri update until 2026. In preparation, Apple has been evaluating whether its own AI models are sufficient to make the assistant competitive with AI answer engines from companies like OpenAI, Perplexity and Google.

The report claims Apple and Google recently reached a formal agreement allowing Apple to test a Google-designed AI model within Siri. If successful, the technology could also be integrated into other iPhone features, including the Safari browser and Spotlight search on the Home Screen.

Previously, Spotlight had positioned itself as a lightweight alternative to web search, providing basic answers about popular topics such as actors, musicians, TV shows and movies. However, with AI chatbots now able to generate quick answers on a wider range of subjects, Apple is seeking ways to match these capabilities and bring more advanced intelligence to Siri.

The upgraded Siri interface is expected to combine text, photos, videos and local points of interest, alongside AI-powered summarisation of search results. It will also be able to access personal data, allowing users to retrieve information from their own device and navigate iPhones using voice commands.
