Apple kills its video editing app as TikTok, Reels make it redundant

Apple has quietly discontinued its Clips video-editing app, ending a seven-year experiment that never quite found its audience. The company confirmed on a support page that it will no longer update Clips, and the app has been removed from the App Store for new users. "The Clips app is no longer being updated, and will no longer be available for download for new users as of October 10, 2025. You can continue to use Clips on iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 or earlier," said Apple on one of its support pages.

A quiet goodbye

Clips launched in 2017 as Apple’s answer to social video creation, offering filters, text overlays, and quick editing tools aimed at Instagram and TikTok users before those platforms became dominant. It was supposed to make short-form video creation simple and Apple-friendly — but despite regular updates, Clips never really took off beyond a niche crowd.

Existing iPhone and iPad users who already have the app can continue using it “for the time being,” though Apple hasn’t specified for how long. The company recommends saving any existing projects to the Photos app or elsewhere, hinting that Clips’ final removal may be imminent.

Why it faded

When Clips launched, apps like TikTok hadn’t yet redefined short video. Now, every major social platform has its own powerful editing tools — often more advanced, social, and AI-assisted than Apple’s standalone option. That made Clips increasingly redundant.

For Apple, which has since shifted focus to hardware-driven creativity and AI-powered features across Photos and Final Cut, keeping Clips alive made little sense.

So if you’ve got old Clips projects tucked away, now might be the right time to export them — before Apple’s forgotten video app fades for good.
