After months of teasers and speculations, Apple has finally unveiled its latest iPhone 17 series. The base iPhone 17 now gets a bigger and faster display, with a few other hardware upgrades. But how does it compare with the last generation iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e? Let us find that out

Apple has finally launched its latest iPhone 17 series at its ‘Awe Dropping’ event, which includes four iPhones: iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The base iPhone 17 has got some major upgrades this year, which take it closer to the Pro devices for the first time. However, you might want to know how it compares to its predecessors, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e. Let us now compare all three devices to find out how they differ.

iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16 vs iPhone 16e: Price

The iPhone 17 has a starting price of Rs 82,900, which means it gets a Rs 3,000 price hike from the launch price of the iPhone 16. However, Apple has now bumped up the storage to 256GB in the base model. Meanwhile, the 512GB variant is priced at Rs 1,02,900. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e have also received a Rs 5,000 price cut, and are now available at a starting price of Rs 74,900 and Rs 54,900, respectively.

The iPhone 17 now gets an upgraded Ceramic Shield 2 glass protection. It is also slightly thicker and heavier than the last generation, with 7.95mm thickness and weighing 177 grams. In contrast, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e get a glass front and back body with an aluminium frame. They are also slightly thinner at 7.8mm, and the iPhone 16 weighs 170 grams, while the 16e weighs 167 grams.

In the display department, the iPhone 17 gets huge upgrades over its predecessors, as it now gets a slightly bigger 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate and Always-on-display support. It also sees a bump in the brightness level, with peak 3,000 nits support. Compared to this, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e sport a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with a 60Hz standard refresh rate support. They also have up to 2000 nits of peak brightness.

iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16 vs iPhone 16e: Performance and battery

The iPhone 17 is powered by the company’s latest A19 chipset, with 8GB RAM for Apple Intelligence support. It gets the latest iOS 26 out of the box and is expected to get the next five years of OS updates. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e are powered by the A18 chipset with 8GB RAM, and will get the iOS 26 update later this month.

The iPhone 17 also gets a boost in the battery department, as it now has a bigger 3,692mAh battery over the 3,561mAh battery pack of the iPhone 16. However, the iPhone 16e with its 4,005 mAh battery still offers the largest capacity.

The iPhone 17 has a dual camera setup like the iPhone 16. However, it now gets a 48MP ultrawide sensor, compared to the 12MP lens on the iPhone 16. The selfie camera also gets an upgrade, with an 18MP lens, which is now square-shaped, allowing you to take landscape selfies. The iPhone 16e offers a single 48MP camera and has a 12MP selfie camera, like the iPhone 16.
